Sprawling over a 54ha site, the zoo’s surroundings adorn a green landscape sure to captivate the public, especially naturalists
Situated in Kampung Ibok about 30km from here, it is seen as catalyst for fiscal growth due to its proximity to the Kertih oil town, that is populated by expatriates, and nearby Kuantan.
Displaying about 100 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, the zoo hopes to attract visitors from as far as Kuala Lumpur who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and appreciate the ecosystems that Terengganu is blessed with.
The zoo is connected to Chukai town via Jalan Mak Chili-Ibok and Jalan Kerteh-Ibok. There is bus service to the zoo available for those disembarking at Chukai bus terminal.
The firefly colony of Kampung Yak Yah is accessible from the zoo. Visitors can also witness other nocturnal animals in search for food during a guided night tour.
One of the main attractions is the pirarucu fish, scientifically known as arapaima gigas, from the Amazon basin.
Two children’s playgrounds and a covered walkway are among the facilities available.

Visitors can view the zoo’s tamer animals at close range while walking on a covered 1.2km walkway, apart from enjoying elephant rides and performances.
Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said, who opened the zoo, said that more attractions would be added to maintain the influx of visitors.
“We are making efforts to introduce exotic and rear species like mountain goats and alligators,” he said.
Ahmad said the state’s vision was to turn the zoo into the most prestigious in the Asia-Pacific region.
“The site is conducive for the animals and we have plans to turn the site into a breeding ground for near-extinct local species like the Malayan Tiger,” he said.
The zoo also offers a herb and orchid park, tropical fruit orchard, bonsai garden and aquatic hub.
Ahmad said the state would assist hotel and resort owners interested in offering tour packages.
